Mokita Dialogues: The Power of Dialogue

February 23, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

From the language Kilivila, spoken near Papua New Guinea, mokita means “a known truth that is left unspoken.” Think of it as, “the elephant in the room.” These brown bag luncheon discussions will address some of the elephants among us, critical social concerns that impact the mental well-being of our residents and the development of our community. Each Mokita(TM) Dialogue session will include presentations, group discussions, activities, and opportunities for follow-up and action.

The Power of Dialogue, facilitated by Susan Marshall, State High Head Counselor, grades 9 – 12

Thursday, February 23

Noon-1pm

New Leaf Initiative (243 S Allen Street, Suite 337, State College)

Dialogue is a form of discussion aimed at fostering mutual insight and common purpose. It involves listening with empathy, bringing assumptions into the open, searching for common ground, and exploring new perspectives. Dialogue helps to dissolve stereotypes and stimulates creativity. Most importantly, it promotes understanding, acceptance and community action. Let’s pull together, address the mokitas around us, and use the power of dialogue to create change and growth.

Community Activators: 3rd Way Collective, Center for Performing Arts at Penn State, Leadership Centre County and State College Borough.
